PB62E Big Brake Kits
(350x34mm discs)
Our PB62E big brake kits feature our ultra-heavy-duty PB62E 6-piston billet race calipers matched to our 350x34mm 2-piece, floating GT Series rotors. These kits are intended for highly tuned / very powerful street cars and mid-heavy weight race / track cars. Our PB62E / 350x34mm kits have been used very successfully on various GT race car platforms such as the Ferrari F430 Challenge, Noble M400, BMW M3, Alfa 147 GTA etc. We also produce these kits for powerful tuner / track day platforms such as the Mitsubishi EVO, Subaru STI, BMW 335i / M3 etc.
Our PB62E caliper uses a 20mm thick pad profile with a large surface area that is available in just about every race pad compound on the world market, meaning that pad compound choice is practically limitless. The design results in an extremely rigid caliper featuring differential piston bores to counter the tapered pad wear issues commonly associated with many ‘long’ race pad profiles. Other features include heavy duty stainless steel pad abutments and mil-spec type-3 hard anodizing. As with all Powerbrake calipers our PB62E units feature pistons that are scalloped and constructed from thick-wall stainless steel in order to reduce heat transfer to fluid and seals and ensure max service life.
Crossover tubes are vibration damped and produced from seamless stainless steel tubing to eliminate vibration induced cracking. The calipers are fitted with ultra-high temperature seals that have been tested to caliper temps in excess of 250 deg C for extended periods without failure (most race caliper manufacturers insist that you replace seals if caliper temperatures exceed 200 deg C). The PB62E caliper also features high-temperature internal wiper seals that keep debris from the pressure seals, which increases service life and reliability. As with all of our calipers, piston retraction is exactly 0.1mm on release of the brakes, resulting in the shortest possible pedal take-up under braking. Internal fluid passages are carefully designed to ensure effortless bleeding.
The 350x24mm 2-piece, floating GT-Series discs included in our PB62E kits consist of a heavy duty rotor friction ring attached to a lightweight aerospace grade aluminium mounting hat or bell. The two parts are held together by twelve high-tensile drive bobbins and custom made bolts. We produce a range of different drive bobbins that allow us to adjust the amount of axial float from zero (in which case the discs can expand and contract radially without interference but do not float axially) to 0.6mm axial float used in certain race applications. At Powerbrake, we refer to disc assemblies with zero axial float as “semi-floating” discs and most of our PB62E kits intended for crossover street/track day applications are delivered with semi-floating disc assemblies due to their quiet operation.
Our semi-floating disc assemblies allow the rotor friction rings to expand and contract independently from the rotor hats, which dramatically reduces stresses within the rotor caused by expansion at high temperatures. The design results in improved pedal consistency as well as reduced disc distortion and cracking. Our full-floating assemblies, which allow for both radial expansion and axial float also allow the rotor to center itself within the caliper and can reduce piston knock back issues that result from extreme bearing flex under cornering in race applications. Generally we limit the supply of full-floating rotor assemblies to non-street applications as some ‘rattle’ is evident when driving over uneven surfaces on public roads.
The rotors feature our staggered cooling vane design, which results in 40% more cooling vane surface area allowing the discs to cool far quicker. The disc friction rings undergo multiple stress-relieving phases during manufacture resulting in an extremely stable finished product that will outlast most competitive product on the market. It takes 12 weeks to manufacture a batch of our discs from casting to finished product. Every single Powerbrake disc is measured in all key dimensions using CNC measuring equipment capable of measuring accurately to tolerances of 0.002mm.
There is no batch or statistical quality checking. Every single disc is measured. We will not ship a disc that has a run out value of more than 0.03mm or a disc thickness variation (DTV) of more than 0.005mm. These machining tolerances are up to three times tighter than the industry norm. All our rotors are chemically de-greased and coated with a dry coating that ensures quick bed-in and maximum friction levels. All rotors feature maximum temperature recording (MTR) tabs (4 - levels) for accurate measuring of max disc temps.
As with all our big brake kits, each kit is tailored to the target vehicle in question. This involves careful software modeling of correct brake balance, brake torque outputs and pedal travel. The result is that the caliper piston diameters in each kit are specified to match the target vehicle in question. Brake balance with the kit is optimised to suite the ABS, EBD and other vehicle stability control systems where applicable.
