Team Afrox’s Anthony Taylor narrowly misses the 2009 A-Class Production Car Championship running Powerbrake

Team Afrox’s Anthony Taylor narrowly missed out on winning the 2009 Bridgestone Production Car A-Class Championship in a rain-soaked final race when a technicality, based on protest actions from earlier in the season between rival teams, handed an additional point to Audi driver Johan Fourie. Fourie was officially named the A-Class Champion after a controversial season finale.

 

 

Both Anthony and team mate Robert Wolk campaigned BMW 330i E90 based race cars during 2009. Both cars ran Powerbrake PB44L / 330x32mm race brake kits up front with excellent results. Taylor in particular was subjected to the addition of substantial weight in the form of ‘success ballast’ as per series regulations after his stunning start to the season. The additional weight was of course felt in terms of both braking and suspension / chassis setup. Powerbrake worked very closely with Team Afrox by recommending cutting-edge pad compounds from Cobalt Friction (USA) and Endless (Japan) in order to ensure that the brakes on Anthony’s car remained a strong point in spite of the weight penalties.

 

 

It is worth noting that in spite of the success ballast carried by Taylor for much of the season, peak front disc temperatures on the car remained in the 500 – 550 deg C range and front caliper temperatures in the 150 – 160 deg C range. These temperatures are ideal for this class of racecar. The proprietary staggered cooling vane technology employed in Powerbrake’s 2-piece, floating GT-Series discs contributed significantly towards these optimum front disc and caliper temperatures.
